Think Global Act Local
The Hampden Roar said, “we need a global vision for Hampden and a roadmap of local development for the stadium that raises the area and makes it a cleaner, safer and fairer place to call home. The survey shows the majority of local respondents want to celebrate our history and we’re calling on the decision makers; to invest in the stadium, create a partnership with Queens Park FC and make Hampden a stadium that is used every day by people in Glasgow.
After the tragedy of the Art School, Glasgow cannot lose another iconic building. Make Hampden a priority for Scotland to celebrate our culture, history, people and national sport and you will attract investment for improvements to the stadium and infrastructure. Creating a global vision and a plan for improvements will boost morale and create a culture of pride and respect for the area.
Looking at the problems in isolation such as parking, street cleanliness, fan experience and transport issues doesn’t fix things. Good people in the local community have been tackling these issues for years. We need to think big and come up with a plan that involves all stakeholders, including the local community.
Take New York in the 1970’s. It was rife with knife crime, going bankrupt and had high drug rates. No one wanted to visit, exacerbating the already failing economy. The city leaders looked at the city’s assets and created a vision around Broadway theatre and the now iconic ‘I love New York logo. Everyone knows the results, most have got the t-shirt, forty years on, New York is one of the world’s greatest tourist destinations and the city is booming.
Hampden is Glasgow’s Broadway. If you want to compare our city with Edinburgh, Hampden is our castle. We want to work with the SFA as a community, we’ve lived with for the better part of a century after all. Let’s create a vision for Hampden – Scotland’s most significant sporting, cultural and historical asset.
